Overview

  • Dr. Wilberger is a hematopathologist with an appointment as Assistant Professor in the Department of Pathology, Division of Laboratory Medicine with responsibilities in clinical service, education, and research. He is certified by the American Board of Pathology in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology and Hematopathology.

    Dr. Wilberger earned his B.A. in Psychology at the University of Virginia and his M.D. degree at Drexel University College of Medicine. He completed the first two years of Anatomic and Clinical Pathology residency at the Cleveland Clinic before transferring to complete the remainder at the University of Colorado, where he served as Chief Resident and devoted an additional year to performing research in the molecular pathology laboratory as part of the American Board of Pathology's Physician-Scientist Research Pathway.

    Dr. Wilberger trained as a fellow in hematopathology at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center under Dr. Steven Swerdlow, an internationally recognized leader in the field of hematopathology and lead editor of the WHO Classification of Tumours of Haematopoietic and Lymphoid Tissues. After completing fellowship, he joined the University of Alabama at Birmingham.
  • Research Overview

  • Dr. Wilberger’s main interest is performing clinical translational research studies of lymphoid neoplasms. He aims to further characterize their morphologic, immunophenotypic, and genetic findings to allow for evidence-based improvements in diagnostic accuracy, prognostication, therapeutic management, and other patient care aspects.
  • Teaching Overview

  • Dr. Wilberger actively participates in medical student and resident/fellow teaching. For pre-clinical first and second year medical students, Dr. Wilberger gives didactic lectures during the hematology block, and he serves as a small group educator for interactive pathology laboratories and other small group sessions. For residents and fellows, Dr. Wilberger gives didactic hematopathology lectures, and when they rotate on the hematopathology service, engages in clinical, case-based education.
