Overview

  • William W. Andrews, PhD, MD, is from Dale County, Alabama. He received his undergraduate degree from Auburn University, 1974, and completed his PhD in Physiology, 1980, (Reproductive Neuroendocrinology) from The Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences, Southwestern Medical Center. Dr. Andrews received his MD degree, cum laude, from University of Alabama School of Medicine, 1984. He obtained his residency training at University Hospital, 1988, where he received Best Senior Resident Research Presentation Award and Best Teaching Chief Resident Award. He then moved to Dallas, Texas where he completed fellowship training in Maternal-Fetal Medicine before returning to the UASOM Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology as an Assistant Professor in 1990. He has held the Charles E. Flowers, Jr. Endowed Chair in OB/GYN since September of 2009.

Following these accomplishments, Dr. Andrews established a Maternal-Fetal Cohort of Preterm Infants, and the ability to evaluate the impact of the profound preterm state on long-term neurodevelopment by six years of age. This application was funded from the NICHD, via Perinatal Emphasis Research Center (PERC) grant and an R01 grant. Dr. Andrews conducted and participated in many clinical research trials and several research networks. He is nationally recognized for his excellent research accomplishments in the field of OB/GYN Clinical Obstetrics and Prematurity. His research has been primarily focused on preterm birth and prevention, concentrating on infection and inflammation as potential diagnosis of involuntary preterm birth.

Dr. Andrews has displayed excellent leadership at UAB as Professor and Chair of the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology, a position he has held for over six years. He is one of the top faculty members at UAB and is a part of many University and UASOM committees. He established the UAB Laboratory for Research in Women’s Health to provide patients with the most up-to-date, knowledgeable, and preventive medical care available. Dr. Andrews exhibits high quality characteristics of research, maternal-fetal clinical care, and education at UAB’s School of Medicine. He is known for showing compassion and support for his faculty, residents, students and staff, as well as contributing to the excellence of resident and student education.

    Research Overview

  • Dr. Andrews is a Professor in the UAB Maternal-Fetal Medicine Division, and has been the Director of the Obstetrics and Gynecology Infectious Disease Research Laboratory since its creation in 1990. Dr. Andrews' research interests relate to obstetrical infections and infection-related preterm birth. He is the PI for an investigation of Interconceptional Antibiotics to Prevent Recurrent Preterm Birth (HD33883 09/20/96-08/31/01; $767,150) that was recently completed and is the protocol chairman of a prospective randomized trial within the NICHD MFM Units Network of antibiotics to prevent preterm birth in women with elevated mid-trimester cervical fibronectin that is in the analysis phase. The projected budget for this investigation is approximately $2,000,000. He is also the PI of Project IV within the UAB Rural Perinatal Emphasis Research Center (1 P01 HD33927-01; 04/05/96-3/31/01; $455,397) which is an evaluation of a neonatal sepsis-like syndrome related to in utero maternal cytokine exposure. Most recently he was awarded a contract to perform "A Longitudinal Study of Bacterial Vaginosis" (NICHD-NO-HD-8-3293; 05/01/98-04/30/02; $2,943,932). Dr. Andrews is a consultant and co-investigator on numerous other interdisciplinary projects related to genital tract infections, sexually transmitted diseases, and preterm birth, and he is a co-investigator within the International Clinical Epidemiology Network (INCLEN). Dr. Andrews is a committed experienced investigator who has been recognized by his department and by the Counsel on Resident Education in Obstetrics and Gynecology for his contribution to education and training. He will continue to be an excellent mentor for fellows and young faculty within the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology and the CRWH. Previous Maternal-Fetal Medicine trainees include: Drs. Alice Goepfert (UAB), Francisco Gaudier, Debora Kimberlin (Brookwood Hospital), Dwight Rouse (UAB), Wendy Atkinson, Patrick Ramsey (UAB), and George Lu.
