Overview

  • Beginning in 2020, my professional efforts have focused on decreasing the impact of trauma on the lives of nurses and U.S. Veterans due to the mass trauma of COVID-19. In 2020, I undertook training to become certified in the Community Resilience Model™, an evidenced-based approach in addressing primary and secondary trauma in the lives of frontline health care providers. Before 2020, I had focused on educating and increasing the psychiatric nurse practitioner workforce, especially as pertaining to Veterans' mental health. A primary focus was on meaningful recovery from trauma for Veterans due to 20 years of armed conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan. While remaining an important continued focus, another battle is being waged today against COVID-19, fought by front line nurses and other clinicians. These individuals are also deserving of interventions to promote their recovery and well-being. In December 2020, I provided six Community Resilience Model™ sessions via Zoom for local nurses to improve their personal resiliency skills. I will present my findings at the American Psychiatric Nurses Association annual conference in October 2021. I have also educated the faculty at the UAB School of Nursing on the science underlying the Community Resilience Model™ and seek to incorporate its principles into the pre-licensure curriculum. This model deserves dissemination to all front-line clinicians as it provides skills for managing stress and trauma.

Historically, Dr. McGuinness' research scholarship has focused on vulnerable youth who have been internationally adopted from orphanages as well as risk and protective factors for children in U.S. foster care. Additionally, her teaching scholarship focuses on increasing psychiatric nursing workforce, especially as it pertains to Veterans' mental health. From 2013-2020, she served as co-director of the Mental Health Nurse Practitioner Residency, a joint program between the Birmingham VAMC and the UAB School of Nursing which educates new psychiatric nurse practitioners in Veteran-centric care. Dr. McGuinness continues to teach in the seminar associated with the residency and mentors the scholarship of early career psychiatric nurse practitioners as they seek to improve Veterans' mental health via use of measurement-based behavioral health care and evidence-based suicide reduction interventions.
