Overview

  • From 2004-10 Dr. Rich was UAB Senior Vice President for Medicine and Dean of the School of Medicine and from 2004-16 served as Professor of Medicine, Microbiology and (since 2012) Medical Education. From 2011-14 he was Faculty Accreditation Lead for reaccreditation of the School of Medicine. From 2014-16 he developed and then served as founding Director of the university-wide UAB Center for Interprofessional Education and Simulation. Dr. Rich was a member of the faculty of Baylor College of Medicine from 1973-98 and from 1990-98 he also served as Vice President and Dean of Research at Baylor. He was an Investigator of the Howard Hughes Medical Institute from 1977-91 and from 1998-04 he was Executive Associate Dean for Research and Strategic Initiatives at Emory University School of Medicine.

    From 2003-08 Dr. Rich was Editor-in-Chief of The Journal of Immunology. Other appointments to editorial boards have included The Journal of Experimental Medicine, The Journal of Infectious Diseases, The Journal of Clinical Immunology and Clinical and Experimental Immunology. He is also the founding Editor-in-Chief of a comprehensive textbook Clinical Immunology: Principles and Practice; the 5th edition of the book is scheduled for publication in 2018. He has authored or co-authored more than 200 articles and chapters in scientific journals and books. His research focused on cellular and molecular interactions between antigen presenting cells and T lymphocytes, including definition of interactions of superantigens with T cell receptors for antigen and discovery of the molecular basis of peptide binding and functional specialization of a major histocompatibility class Ib molecule.

    Dr. Rich is Past President and Past Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Federation of American Societies for Experimental Biology. He is also Past President of the Clinical Immunology Society. He was Vice President of the American Academy of Allergy Asthma and Immunology, Chair of its Professional Education Council, Chair of the Basic and Clinical Immunology Interest Section and a member of its Board of Directors. He served as a member of two NIH Study Sections (as chair of one) and on the Boards of Directors of the American Board of Allergy and Immunology (also as chair) and the American Board of Internal Medicine. He was a Councilor of the American Clinical and Climatological Association and a member of the Council of the American Association of Immunologists, for which he also chaired the committees on Clinical Immunology and Public Affairs.
