I have a broad background in health and physical activity, with training in health education, exercise science and nutrition. I have worked with school systems over the past 15 years to implement interventions to improve health and wellness among the student population. My research and resulting presentations and publications have focused primarily on youth and schools related to nutrition, physical activity and wellness. I have also assisted in the development of state policies outlining improvements in nutrition in schools.
Service
Service to the health education and health promotion profession is an important obligation to me. I have served as a board member of ASAHPERD and the Southern District of SHAPE America, which promotes the important work that school health educators and physical educators do everyday. I also serve on several sub-committees of SHAPE America, which serve the interests of health educators. I also volunteer my time as a member of the State Obesity Task Force and the Jefferson County Health Action Partnership. I have also volunteered time and served the YMCA, and Jones Valley Teaching Farms.
Personal
Away from academia, I enjoy spending time with family and friends. I love to travel and also enjoy gardening, hiking and anything active and outdoors. I am an avid runner and teach group exercise at the UAB Recreation Center and YMCA.
