Dr. Gilchrist and his staff educate over 1,000 undergraduate students per year, helping them with biological foundations for careers in Applied Health Sciences and Health/Physical Education careers. He enjoys teaching a wide range of biology subjects and is highly recommended by his students. He has been a member of the faculty of the Department of Biology since 1999. He is the Master Course Coordinator for the Human Physiology and Human Pathophysiology curriculum, and has served as interim Master Course Coordinator for Human Anatomy on two separate occasions.
Dr. Gilchrist has a dedicated passion for improving scientific knowledge and mastery for students at all levels, and is eager to help them achieve success. He enthusiastically embraces the UABTeach philosophy and participates in its program objectives, and assists graduate students who want to earn non-research MS degrees focused on teaching science.
Community service is an important part of Dr. Gilchrist's teaching philosophy. He is an executive officer for the Central Alabama Regional Science and Engineering Fair; since 2001 he has overseen the judging for 300+ middle and high school student science projects. Four students from the fair qualify for the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair, where young innovators share ideas, showcase cutting-edge research, and compete for more than $5 million in awards and scholarships. He also serves the community with K-12 science teacher education and regional high school student visitations to UAB Anatomy and Physiology field trips.
