  • Advances in genetics are not only shedding light on the pathogenesis of rare single gene disorders but are also beginning to reveal the bases for more complex common diseases. This will lead to improved precision of genetic counseling as well as the possibility of prevention or treatment. Progress in the under standing of neural tube defects, diabetes mellitus, and cancer, reviewed here, provide examples of the approaches and insights that are likely to follow for a wide range of disorders in the near future.
