Modeling g-sensitivity of low-gravity experiments

  • A variety of approaches, ranging from order of magnitude estimates, closed form analyses and numerical models can be used to assess the sensitivity of an experiment to microgravity residual acceleration. To date, the bulk of these studies was based entirely on theoretical prediction and lacked quantitative corroborating experimental data in all but a few cases. In this paper, we summarize recent results for directional solidification that demonstrate the reliability of using numerical models to analyze g-sensitivity. We also present the results of combination of numerical modeling and order of magnitude estimates of the sensitivity of a self-diffusion coefficient experiment.
