Accuracy of creatinine clearance estimates in geriatric males with elevated serum creatinine

Academic Article

  • Accurately estimating renal function is necessary for determining the fate of drugs which are renally eliminated. This is especially true of elderly patients with impaired kidney function, who cannot tolerate elevated plasma drug concentrations or additional insult to an already impaired renal status. Predictions of Clcr calculated by each of eight frequently utilized formulas were compared with measured creatinine clearance (Clcr) values in 59 males 65 years of age and older with serum creatinines (SCr) > 1.5 mg/dl to identify the best equation for use in predicting Clcr in this geriatric population. Both regression analysis and predictive error analysis were used.
