An overview of the evidence for enhanced recovery

Academic Article

Abstract

  • Enhanced recovery programs (ERPs) use standardized, multidisciplinary and evidence-based protocols to optimize patient recovery after surgery. Significant evidence exists that highlight their benefits to patients, providers and healthcare systems. These range from effects on clinical outcomes and costs to patient-reported outcomes and surgical disparities. The implementation of enhanced recovery principles is also being increasingly studied with an innovative focus on technology as adjuncts to improve adherence and patient experience. As ERPs are increasingly adopted across the globe, they will continue to evolve with better protocols, new applications and more evidence.
