Bowel considerations in gynecologic surgery

  • Every gynecologist must have a thorough understanding of the gastrointestinal (GI) tract. Problems of the GI tract will often present as gynecologic complaints. In addition, many gynecologic problems have related GI symptoms. Finally, the GI tract must be considered in the pre-, intra-, and postoperative management of most gynecologic operations. Many of the intraoperative and postoperative complications of gynecologic operations involve the GI tract. Awareness of the relationship of the bowel to gynecologic disorders and procedures, appropriate preoperative evaluation in order to establish the differential diagnosis, and diagnosis and management of complications involving the GI tract are crucial to the pelvic surgeon.
