The vascular stem cell

Chapter

Abstract

  • The vascular stem cell, derived from either bone marrow or the vasculature itself, has tantalized the imaginations of vascular biologists while tormented them with its difficult identification. The cluster of differentiation 34 (CD34) in human and spinocerebellar ataxia type 1 (Sca-1) in mice have been utilized as markers to identify endothelial precursors (EPCs) derived from hematopoietic stem cells, whereas dilutional cloning and in vitro culture has been used to characterize the EPC derived directly from the vasculature. EPCs can participate in blood-vessel formation and are a source of paracrine factors and their levels in the circulation may serve as a biomarker of ocular health as well as disease.
