Ecological responses to climate change on the Antarctic Peninsula

Academic Article

  • Researchers from the Polar and Marine Biology at the University of Alabama, Birmingham, have recently recorded the breaking of ice on the Antarctic Peninsula. The retreat of the Marr glacier was recorded at the Bio Lab at Palmer Station, on the western shore of the Antarctic Peninsula. As such, researchers have focused on three segments of the ecosystem in that region, including marine plankton, the benthos, or the community of bottom-dwelling plants and invertebrate animals, and the penguins and other seabirds in the area.
