  • Psychologists possess unique qualifications to serve as elected public officials. However, psychologists often are unprepared or unable to provide a thoughtful, honest, public statement of their individual core values, what implications these values have for their practice and politics, and why they believe they are representative of, and sensitive to, their respective constituencies. Integrating one's personal experiences, professional training, and commitment to societal change and progress is illustrated with the author's personal development into his positions as both a clinical psychologist and a state legislator.
