A proposed absorption spectroscopy for studying energy levels of atoms in collision with surfaces

  • A novel spectroscopy is proposed in which an atomic or ion beam in collision with a surface is excited electronically by a high intensity pulsed laser beam illuminating the surface. By monitoring ions or excited atoms in the reflected beam information about the shift and broadening of the atomic energy levels near the surface is obtained. We work out the theory of the spectroscopy in a suitable model framework and demonstrate its theoretical feasibility. © 1987 Elsevier Science Publishers B.V.
