Detection and identification of moving targets

Academic Article

  • Though they could distinguish a moving target from a blank field, subjects in earlier work often greatly misperceived the direction of the movement. This observation was followed up in three experiments comparing detection of moving random-dot patterns to identification of the patterns direction of movement. Two different theoretical treatments indicate that in order to be detected by entirely independent mechanisms, two directions must differ by at least 120°. © 1983.
