  • Mycoplasma pneumoniae, one of the first organisms identified as a cause of 'atypical pneumonias,' remains an enigma to clinicians and scientists. This organism is found in multiple organ systems, although primarily in the respiratory tract. Rapid sensitive and specific diagnostic techniques have not been available previously, but they are on the horizon; they promise to improve general understanding and treatment of the diseases caused by this organism.
