Basal ganglia physiology and dbs for parkinson's disease: Introduction and postulated mechanisms

Chapter

Abstract

  • After reviewing the historical development of deep brain stimulation (DBS) as a therapy in the first chapter, and before we dive into its clinical applications in different disorders, we will here review the motor circuitry of the basal ganglia, how it is dysfunctional in Parkinson's disease, then the postulated mechanism of action of DBS.
