The data available regarding the prevalence, incidence, and impact of pressure ulcers demonstrate that they are a serious public health problem in the United States, particularly among the elderly. Factors that are associated with increased risk of pressure ulcer development have been defined in different populations. Knowledge of these risk factors may help refine risk assessment strategies and improve understanding of the pathogenesis of pressure ulcers. Future clinical and research efforts should focus on developing and testing prevention and treatment strategies that will improve outcomes for persons at risk for or diagnosed with pressure ulcers.
