The innocent bystander: The child as unintended victim of domestic violence involving deadly weapons

Academic Article

  • Children are not infrequent witnesses to violence within their families, even if they are not participants or direct victims of such assaults. The potential for physical harm to these children in such situations exists because the volatility of the encounters often does not give the child opportunity to escape. Significant injury is praticularly likely to occur if potentially deadly weapons are used in the domestic disagreements. The incidence of inadvertent physical injury to children in such circumstances is unknown, but the fact that injury does occur is demonstrated by the cases reported.
