Overview

  • Dr.Thirumalai is an Assistant Professor teaching in the MS in Health Informatics program at UAB. He serves as a Co-Director of UAB's Rehabilitation Engineering Research Center on Interactive Exercise Technologies and Exercise Physiology for People with Disabilities (funded by NIDILRR/ACL/HHS). He is the Director of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) for the UAB/Lakeshore Research Collaborative and leads and directs the various ICT initiatives for several centers/projects including the National Center on Health, Physical Activity and Disability (funded by CDC), multiple NIH-R01s, a PCORI funded comparative effectiveness trial and multiple NIDILRR funded projects.

    He has been involved in technology development and research related to improving the health and function of people with disabilities for the last 19 years. He has received multiple pilot grants and an award for his artificial intelligence supported health coaching platform for glycemic control in people with disabilities.

    He conceptualized, designed and developed the largest online physical activity intervention for people with disabilities that has served more than 40,000 people since its launching in 2012. His dissertation focused on “Online Health Behavior Change Using Social Media”.
