The philosophy in which Michelle's teaching is grounded parallels her purpose in life, to serve others. She feel fortunate to be called to teach a broad spectrum of material from the basic sciences and health behavior to teamwork and healthcare simulation. Regardless of the subject, the fundamental principles of providing a psychologically safe and caring learning environment, clear expectations, and innovative learning activities guide her approach to teaching. These principles, combined with her ability to present advanced concepts in way that is simple to understand have secured her success as an educator. Michelle feels it is her responsibility to use this gift of teaching to serve others.
Michelle teaches to help others reach their potential. In her courses, both graduate and undergraduate, she works to drive students beyond simply obtaining knowledge, toward problem-solving, synthesizing new ideas, and effectively communicating these ideas to their peers, patients, and administrative leadership. While she emphasizes attention to detail and the merger of theory and practice, she also emphasizes pausing to reflect on how student's ability, gifts, and character impact those around them. Maintaining fluency in her areas of expertise enables her to bring passion and rigor to her courses. Paired with a desire to serve the students and help them succeed, this allows her to bring excitement to the classroom. There is a sense of commitment, progress, and urgency when passion and service are combined.
