Overview

  • Dr. Michael Hanaway joined the UAB Division of Transplantation in February 2005. A native of Wisconsin, Dr. Hanaway received his undergraduate degree from the University of Wisconsin, and proceeded to medical school at the University of Wisconsin, graduating in 1992. He completed his surgical residency in general surgery at the University of Wisconsin in 1997, and returned after a year of research at Duke University to complete his multi-organ transplant fellowship in 2000. Dr. Hanaway began his surgical career at the University of Cincinnati before coming to UAB in 2005. Dr. Hanaway is a specialist in kidney and pancreas transplantation as well as live donor surgery. Dr. Hanaway is the Surgical Director of the Kidney Transplant Program at UAB, and oversees all aspects of the program, with particular attention to pre-transplant evaluation. Dr. Hanaway has served on UNOS committees including the Membership and Professional Standards Committee. Dr. Hanaway is reviewer for the American Journal of Transplantation, Transplantation and The American Journal of Surgery.

Dr. Hanaway’s clinical interests include kidney and pancreas transplantation. His surgical focus is primarily on kidney transplantation and laparoscopic live donor nephrectomy. Over the past 15 years, Dr. Hanaway has performed a high volume of laparoscopic donor nephrectomies and has one of the largest experiences in the U.S. Dr. Hanaway’s research interest has focused on induction therapy in kidney transplantation.
