I have long been interested in the impact that international education has on academic achievement and student success at the university level. Study abroad has shown to improve retention rates and academic performance, but universities are still grappling with how best to address access and equity in their study abroad program offerings and more research in this area is needed. I am also interested in the role that emotional intelligence (EQ) plays in personal and organizational leadership development. Most recently, I have engaged in research related to understanding the relationship between study abroad and EQ, especially concerning underrepresented group members’ access to and resiliency in study abroad participation. Emerging interests include expanding to the university level the research on developing an organizational culture of learning, leaders’ EQ related to their reality testing abilities, and EQ’s potential relationship to the strategic planning process. In particular, I am fascinated with how diversionary tactics are used during a strategic planning process and whether or not there are potential correlations between EQ levels and said tactics.
