Dr. Michael Faircloth is an Associate Professor in the Department of Family and Community Medicine (DFCM) at the University of Alabama at Birmingham. He is Board Certified in Family Medicine. He received his undergraduate degree from the University of Alabama in 1984 with a BS in Microbiology, his MD degree from the University of Alabama School of Medicine, 1990. His residency training was completed at the University of Alabama at Birmingham Department of Family and Community Medicine, 1993, having served as Chief Resident 1992-93.
Dr. Faircloth was in private practice in the Birmingham area from 1993-2007, returning to UAB as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Family and Community Medicine, Division of Student Health Services (SHS) in 2007. He was named Medical Director of SHS in 2009, later named Interim Chair for the DFCM, holding that title from 2016-2018. More recently, he has returned to his role as Medical/Lab Director for SHS and, in addition, named Director for the Alabama Statewide Area Health Education Centers (AHEC), housed within the DFCM.
Dr. Faircloth is part of many University and University of Alabama School of Medicine (UASOM) committees. He has been instrumental in developing and implementing an effective, evidence-based campus wide protocol for student Medical Clearance/Immunization Compliance for the institution. He helped lead an external review of SHS and a strategic planning effort in 2012, resulting in a redesign of SHS including integration with UAB Student Counseling, implementation of a college-specific EMR, relocation to a much larger and centrally located Student Health and Wellness Center, and transition to the Division of Student Affairs, gaining an increased footprint, visibility, improved access and enhanced reputation. He also participated in an external review of the DFCM in 2016, with resulting recommendations leading to relocation of the clinical enterprise to UAB Highlands and an innovative reimplementation of a Family Medicine (FM) residency, the Cahaba-UAB Family Medicine Residency, partnering with Cahaba FM Residency, a Federally-Qualified Health Care Center and Teaching Health Center, in 2018.
Dr. Faircloth has a keen interest as an educator. He has participated in the SOM Introduction to Clinical Medicine (ICM) effort, serves as a preceptor for UAB Internal Medicine residents and Children’s Hospital of Alabama Adolescent Medicine fellows, and is a collaborating physician for a number of Family and Women’s Health Nurse Practitioners. He also serves on the SOM Admissions Committee as part of his role as Director of the AHEC program.
