Overview

  • Dr. Matthews is an infectious disease trained clinician-scientist funded by NIMH and NICHD since 2011 to develop and test interventions that reduce HIV in the context of sexual and reproductive health for men and women in Uganda and South Africa. She has worked in South Africa and Uganda since 2007 and 2010, respectively. She started in a new role as an Associate Professor at the University of Alabama at Birmingham in 2019 where she has since expanded the scope of her research to address PrEP for Black adolescent girls and young women, HIV testing, and SARS-CoV2 in Alabama.

    She directs global health research for the UAB Division of Infectious Diseases and serves as Associate Director for Global Health Research and Partnerships for the UAB School of Medicine.
