• Kathleen Harrington is a health behaviorist who directs the UAB Tobacco Consult Service and is currently involved in tobacco cessation and electronic cigarette research among hospital patients. She is also involved with a program promoting enrollment in the MD-MPH joint degree program. She has designed and delivered training to apply motivational interviewing techniques to promote engagement and adherence for a variety of health issues. Kathleen Harrington received masters degrees in Education and Public Health (epidemiology) prior to completing her doctorate in Health Education and Promotion from UAB.

    Research Overview

  • Dr. Harrington's past research includes pediatric asthma and the role of parent health literacy, development of a verbal exchange health literacy measure, and using motivational interviewing techniques to promote supplemental oxygen adherence among patients with COPD. Dr. Harrington has taught evaluation courses in the School of Public Health and a Health Literacy elective in the School of Medicine. She has also supervised multiple students for both single and joint degree MPH internships. Dr. Harrington has adjunct faculty positions in the Department of Family Medicine and the Department of Health Behavior in Ryals School of Public Health and is a Senior Scientist of the UAB Comprehensive Cancer Center.
