    Research Overview

  • Dr. Burgio's clinical research interests are in the field of Behavioral Medicine and include health behaviors, treatment seeking, genito-urinary disorders (such as urinary incontinence and nocturia), bowel disorders (such as irritable bowel syndrome and constipation), eating and nutrition in older adults, mobility, behavior problems associated with dementia, and staff training and management in the nursing home. Since 1981, her research has focused on the epidemiology and treatment of urinary incontinence, with emphasis on behavioral treatments. Her research agenda in incontinence has included investigations of its prevalence and risk factors and clinical studies of the effectiveness of behavioral treatment with a variety of populations. She has worked on developing and refining treatment techniques such as biofeedback training for bladder control and tested the procedures in middle-aged and older men and women, post-prostatectomy patients, and stroke patients. Her work has helped to streamline behavioral procedures, clarify their advantages and limitations, understand the role of various components, explore the mechanisms of their effects, and establish their effectiveness in older adults with stress or urge incontinence. She is currently lead investigator on two NIH-funded clinical trials. and co-principal investigator on a third.
