• Dr. Bernard is an Assistant Professor in the UAB Division of Pulmonary, Allergy, and Critical Care Medicine. She began her research training by earning degrees in Life Sciences and Cellular Biology & Physiology from France's University of Nice. She followed this initial training with an MSc in Pharmacology and a PhD in Molecular and Cellular Biology, also from the University of Nice. Dr. Bernard worked as a postdoctoral fellow in the UAB Department of Physiology & Biophysics starting in 2004, before taking on research responsibilities in Georgia's Emory School of Medicine. In 2011, she returned to UAB, this time working in the Division of Pulmonary, Allergy, and Critical Care Medicine. She is currently engaged in research on idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis.

    Research Overview

  • Dr. Bernard's research background and training is in biochemistry and cellular biology of the lung. She completed her postdoctoral training at the University of Alabama at Birmingham, where her research focused on identifying mechanisms by which correctors and/or potentiators rescue CFTR (Cystic Fibrosis Transmembrane conductance Regulator) expression and/or activity in the airway epithelium. Her research interests have evolved to studies of lung injury-repair and myofibroblast biology. Her research has recently shown that metabolic reprogramming is an essential feature of myofibroblast differentiation. She is also working in collaboration with Southern Research Institute (SRI) on identifying specific inhibitors of the NADPH oxidase 4 (Nox4). Specifically, she assisted in the 30,000 compound library HTS by developing cell-based assays of Nox4 activity and myofibroblast activation, as well as animal models of lung fibrosis (including the aging model).
