Overview

  • Dr. Van Matre is the senior Professor in the Collat School of Business, joining the school when it was formed in 1971. He holds the BSEE and the MBA from Auburn and the PhD in Business Statistics from the University of Alabama. He has held leadership positions in state, regional, and national organizations: President, AL Chapter of the American Statistical Association, President
    of the Southeast Decision Sciences Institute (and recipient of their Distinguished Service Award), Vice-President and Director of the Decision Sciences Institute, and Board Member for the Teachers Retirement System of Alabama. He is especially proud of his teaching awards, three of which he received from the Executive Masters of Health Administration (MHA) classes (this program is ranked second nationally by U. S. News and World Report) and in 2015 he was honored with The Ingalls/Alumni Award, which is presented annually to a full-time regular UAB faculty member who, throughout his/her career at UAB, has demonstrated an outstanding commitment to teaching. Dr. Van Matre was a co-author of five books and numerous journal articles; three journals selected his work as the lead article (The American Statistician, Journal of the American Health Information Management Association, and Business Horizons). In honor of his parents, he established a UAB CSOB Scholarship
    fund to help students continue their education.
