Jorge I. de la Torre, M.D., F.A.C.S., M.S.H.A., is Professor of Surgery and Rehabilitative Medicine and is the Director of the Division of Plastic Surgery. He also has serves as an Assistant Chief Medical Officer at UAB, Program Director of the Plastic Surgery Residency and Section Chief of Plastic Surgery at the Birmingham V.A. Medical Center. He is the founding Director of the Center for Advanced Surgical Aesthetics at UAB.
Dr. de la Torre is from Texas where he completed his undergraduate education at the University of Texas in Austin. He received his medical degree from the University of Texas Medical School in Houston. He completed general surgery training at St. Joseph Medical Center in Houston and plastic surgery residency at Nassau University Medical Center with the Long Island Plastic Surgery Group. He then completed a fellowship specializing in aesthetic plastic surgery and breast surgery at UAB. Currently he is participating in the Masters of Science in Health Administration program.
Dr. de la Torre is a member of numerous professional societies including, The American Association of Plastic Surgeons, American Society of Plastic Surgeons, Plastic Surgery Research Council, American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery, American Society of Maxillofacial Surgeons, American Council of Academic Plastic Surgeons and he serves on the Executive Board for the Southeastern Society of Plastic Surgeons. He is a member of AOA. He participates in outreach program to Honduras to provide clinical care for local residents including cleft lip and palate, traumatic reconstruction and hand surgery. He has been invited to give presentations both nationally and internationally. He has published numerous peer-review articles and book chapters in plastic surgery, ranging from aesthetic surgery to complex wound reconstruction.
