Overview

  • I received my M.D. degree from the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul in Brazil, followed by residency in Internal Medicine at the same institution. I moved to the United States with my husband in 1986 to become a Research Fellow at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland, for 2 years. We then moved to Boston, where I continued working as a fellow at Harvard Medical School. In 1993, we relocated to Birmingham, Alabama. I completed a residency in Pathology and a fellowship in Hematopathology at UAB and am Board certified in Anatomic and Clinical Pathology, with subspecialties in Hematology and Transfusion Medicine/Blood Banking. I am Professor of Pathology at UAB, serving medical director of Transfusion Services. I spent my time doing patient care, teaching, clinical research and administrative duties. In the clinical arena, I am particularly interested in improving appropriateness of utilization of blood products and laboratory tests. I thoroughly enjoy giving lectures locally and in other institutions on these topics and the role of the clinical pathologist in decreasing diagnostic error. Finally, UAB is a pioneer in Patient Blood Management through a collaboration between the Transfusion Services, clinicians and hospital administration since 2007.

    Research Overview

  • Patient Blood Management - I am interested in various aspects of clinical research in the fields of coagulation and transfusion medicine. Since UAB is a center of reference for apheresis, we receive patients from throughout Alabama and neighboring states to be treated here for thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (TTP). In the last several years, I have been involved in several projects about TTP as seen in my list of publications. Other areas of interest in Transfusion Medicine include the effect of storage time on the red blood cells and the repercussion for the patients, as well as transfusion-related acute lung injury (TRALI). In the area of coagulation, I have an interest in hypercoagulability, heparin-induced thrombocytopenia diagnosis, and cost-effective utilization of laboratory assays.

Keywords - Thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (TTP), patient blood management, storage lesion, massive transfusion
