Overview

  • Dr. Gabriel is cross-trained in exercise physiology and epidemiology with expertise implementing physical fitness and physical activity measures in large, observational studies. Her research interests focus on two key areas of inquiry. First is the development and evaluation of methodological strategies that optimize the precision of physical fitness, physical activity and sedentary behavior measures that are practical for use in large, population-based studies. The second is to examine the timing of physical fitness or physical activity and sedentary behaviors and risk of subsequent disease and disability using a life-course perspective. She current serves or has served as principal investigator on projects funded by the American College of Sports Medicine, American Institute for Cancer Research, American Heart Association, National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute, and National Institute on Aging.

She actively collaborates on several large observational studies, providing consultation and support specific to: study design, strategies for physical activity and sedentary behavior assessment, computation/derivation of summary estimates, data reduction and processing of accelerometer data, statistical handling of physical activity and sedentary behavior data, statistical methods to examine associations of physical activity and sedentary behavior with health risk factors and outcomes, data interpretation, and dissemination of findings. These collaborations include several large, federally funded cohort studies including Coronary Artery Risk Development in Young Adults and the Study of Women’s Health Across the Nation. In addition, her scholarly work includes over 200 peer-reviewed publications and four book chapters.
