Overview

  • Eugenia Kharlampieva is a polymer and materials chemist with research interests in the design and synthesis of polymeric materials for biomedical applications. She received her PhD in Polymer Science from the Stevens Institute of Technology and postdoctoral training in Materials Science and Engineering at the Georgia Institute of Technology. She joined UAB in 2010.

    Dr. Kharlampieva has authored more than 80 peer-reviewed publications, four book chapters, and six patents. She was awarded funding through the NSF CAREER program in 2014, which supports junior faculty who exemplify the role of teacher-scholars through outstanding research, excellent education, and the integration of education and research. She is an Executive Committee member at Oak Ridge National Laboratory, SHUG (SNS and HFIR User Group). She also serves on an Advisory Committee in Neutron Scattering at Oak Ridge National lab, UT/ORNL DOE EPSCoR, and at the Editorial Board of Journal of Analytical & Bioanalytical Techniques.

    Research Overview

  • The Kharlampieva research program centers at the intersection of polymer chemistry, nanotechnology, and biomedical science. Her group focuses on design and synthesis of polymeric materials for therapeutic applications, including controlled delivery and regenerative medicine. Her particular interest is in the use of polymer chemistry and surface engineering to develop nanothin coatings for cellular encapsulation and nano- and micro-particles for targeted drug delivery.

    The Kharlampieva group environment is team-oriented and highly interdisciplinary. It provides the opportunity for students and postdoctoral scientists with backgrounds in chemistry, biology, materials, and the pharmaceutical sciences. The group is actively engaged in collaborative partnerships across campus, including the Schools of Dentistry, Medicine, Engineering, and Public Health, and with the Comprehensive Cancer Center, the Diabetes Research Center, and the Center for Biophysical Sciences & Engineering, as well as with other universities and national labs.
