• Dr. LaFon received his initial medical training at USF Health Morsani College of Medicine in Tampa, Florida. He went on to complete internship and residency, as well as clinical and research fellowships at the University of Alabama at Birmingham under the mentorship of Drs. Moon Nahm and Mark Dransfield.

He currently serves as an Assistant Professor of Medicine in the UAB Division of Pulmonary, Allergy, and Critical Care Medicine and directs the Multiplexed Opsonophagocytosis Assay (MOPA) Core Laboratory at UAB.

    Research Overview

  • Dr. LaFon’s research focuses on adaptive immune responses and diagnostic approaches in bacterial respiratory infections, particularly among individuals with COPD and primary immunodeficiencies. He is currently investigating pneumococcal antibody function and IgG variants as risk factors for acute exacerbations of COPD. He is also involved with several collaborative clinical and translational studies focusing on antibody-mediated immune responses, respiratory infections, and COPD exacerbations/disease phenotypes.
