Overview

  • Wendy Demark-Wahnefried, PhD, RD is Professor and Webb Endowed Chair of Nutrition Sciences at the University of Alabama at Birmingham (UAB). Dr. Demark-Wahnefried received her baccalaureate degree in Nutritional Science and Biochemistry from the University of Michigan and then completed a coordinated master’s degree – dietetic internship through the VA Texas Medical Center, Texas Women’s University and Baylor College of Medicine. She completed her doctoral degree in Nutritional Science from Syracuse University in 1988. Dr. Demark-Wahnefried began her career in cancer research at Duke University where she was on faculty for 17 years, rising from Assistant to Full Professor in the Department of Surgery. In 2007, she was recruited to M. D. Anderson Cancer Center. In 2010, she came to UAB as the Associate Director for Cancer Prevention and Control in the Cancer Center. She has led 13 NIH-funded clinical trials of diet and physical activity interventions in cancer patients and survivors and has participated as a co-investigator on several other investigations. Dr. Demark-Wahnefried research ranges from determining mechanisms of action of nutrition-based therapies that are implemented presurgery to developing and testing interventions that are scalable and which improve diet, physical activity and functional status among cancer survivors. Demark-Wahnefried’s research in cancer control and survivorship has resulted in roughly 300 peer-reviewed scientific publications, and recognition as a Komen Professor of Survivorship and an American Cancer Society Clinical Research Professor. She is former President of the American Society of Preventive Oncology and serves or has served on several committees, including the American Cancer Society’s Guidelines Panel for Nutrition and Physical Activity, World Cancer Research Fund, American College of Sports Medicine Guidelines Panel for Physical Activity in Cancer Survivors, American Society of Clinical Oncology Committee on Cancer Survivorship and Energy Balance, and the National Cancer Policy Forum of the National Academy of Sciences, Engineering and Medicine.
