I received my M.D. degree from the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul in Brazil, followed by residency in Internal Medicine at the same institution. I moved to the United States with my husband in 1986 to become a Research Fellow at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, Maryland, for 2 years. I have an interest in hemostasis and thrombosis research, specifically thrombotic microangiopathies including thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (TTP). At the University of North Carolina, I am assisting in banking plasma from each TTP patient’s first apheresis procedure, which will allow us to create a bank of research samples for additional studies. Going forward, I plan to utilize these banked samples to further my work in potential biomarker recognition as a predictor of TTP relapse.

My clinical research focuses on diagnostic tools, techniques, and approaches that aide in the diagnosis of difficult hematopathology diagnosis. Examples of my past clinical interests included included identification and confirmation of minimal leukemic blast involvement of the CSF, identification of megakaryoblasts for diagnosing acute megakaryoblastic leukemia, use of flow cytometry for minimal detection of residual acute leukemia in pediatric patients.
