My research focus is on understanding the molecular basis of cancer using integrative genomic, epigenetic and proteomic approach. Our groups translational cancer research involves transferring the basic research discoveries to develop disease detection markers of developing therapy for the identified targets. I have worked extensively in the area of solid tumor genomics, biomarker discovery, biology, and therapeutic targeting.
Our group’s research helps better understand the...
Dr. Manne obtained his M.S. (Biochemistry, Histochemistry, Parasitology, Zoonosis) and Ph.D. (energy metabolic pathways of endoparasites) degrees from Osmania University, Hyderabad, India. His postdoctoral training was in molecular immunology and vaccine development for malaria (Malaria Research Center, Delhi, India); in helicobacter infections (School of Microbiology, University of New South Wales, Sydney, Australia); and in histopathology, molecular tumor biology, and preclinical translational...
Dr. Chen received her BS degree from Fudan University and her Ph.D. from Xiamen University. She completed postdoctoral training and was appointed as a research instructor at the University of Vermont, School of Medicine. Dr. Chen joined the faculty of Department of Pathology at UAB in June 2004. She is currently Jay M McDonald, MD, Endowed Professor in Laboratory Medicine, Professor in Molecular and Cellular Pathology and Vice Chair for Faculty Development and Education; as well as a Research Ca...
Over the last 25 years at UAB, I have dedicated a significant effort toward project leadership and mentoring. I have served as the Ph.D. thesis mentor for 14 graduate students in my own laboratory and have served on 71 other graduate student Ph.D. thesis committees. I have been the K-award mentor of two fellows and have trained other hematology/oncology fellows (2) and postdocs (7), the vast majority of whom continue to work in science-related careers. I have also served as the Co-Director of th...
Dr. Elmets major research interests focus on environmental influences on the skin and on the immune system. His research has investigated how ultraviolet light and other environmental agents interact with immunological function of the skin. Initial studies in mice showed that in vivo exposure of murine skin produced a local deficiency in the antigen presenting function of skin, thereby resulting in the preferential generation of antigen specific regulatory T-cells. Studies examining the mechanis...
Dr. Cheng completed his medical education at Hunan Medical University in 1985. Later, he continued his graduate training at the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences & Peking Union Medical College, and Hunan Medical University, where he later became a faculty member. Dr. Cheng served as vice chairman of the Center for Molecular Biology at Hunan Medical University from 1993 to 1996. He completed additional postdoctoral training at the Kimball Research Institute (New York Blood Center) and Emory Un...
The overall research plans of our laboratory are aimed at discovering fundamental cellular and molecular mechanisms involved in the development of T and B lymphocytes. Particular attention is focused on the factors involved in the establishment of a diverse B cell repertoire and the identification of novel B cell subsets and B cell progenitors in mice and humans.
