Overview

  • Michael A. Taylor, M.D., FAAP joined the faculty of the UAB Department of Pediatrics as Professor of Pediatrics and Director of the Division of Child Abuse Pediatrics in August of 2015. Prior to coming to UAB, Dr. Taylor was Chief of the Child Abuse Pediatrics Division at the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC) in Charleston, SC from 2013 to 2015. He was a faculty member of the Department of Pediatrics at the University of Alabama School of Medicine, Tuscaloosa Campus from 1991 to 2013 where he was Professor & Chair. Prior to his academic career, he was in private practice of pediatrics from 1979 to 1988 in Raleigh, NC, and from 1988-1991 in Paducah, KY. He began performing medical evaluations of potentially abused children as an examiner for the North Carolina Child Medical Evaluation Program in Raleigh, NC in 1982. He has over 30 years of experience in child abuse pediatrics. He graduated from the University of Louisville School of Medicine (1976) and completed his pediatric training at The Children’s Hospital of Alabama (University of Alabama Birmingham) in 1979. Board certified in General Pediatrics and Child Abuse Pediatrics, his special interests, research, and publications are in child abuse medical evaluation.

  • • I was the attending for the general pediatric service at the Wake County Medical Center, Raleigh, NC every June from 1980-1988. In that role, I provided oversight and instruction for UNC School of Medicine pediatric residents & medical students.
    • I taught general pediatrics to family medicine residents and medical students at the University of Alabama School of Medicine, Tuscaloosa Campus from 8/1/1991 to 1/31/2013. During these years, I also served on five psychology graduate student dissertation committees in my role as Adjunct Professor of Psychology.
    • I taught Child Abuse Pediatrics to faculty, residents, & medical students at the Medical University of South Carolina Children’s Hospital from 2/19/2013 to 6/30/2015.
    • I was Chair of the Research Oversight Committee for Kendra Ham, MD, Child Abuse Pediatrics Fellow, from 1/1/2014-6/30/2015
    • I am currently attending in the Pediatric Primary Care Clinic at the Children’s of Alabama, Birmingham, Alabama providing general pediatrics oversight for the pediatric residents in their continuity clinic. I am also teaching child abuse pediatrics to pediatric residents and medical students.
